Commenting on the latest CIPS/Markit Construction PMI for April, Jan Crosby.

“It’s another positive month for the UK’s construction industry - boosted by renewed confidence in the private sector, a public sector wanting to get Britain building, and a booming housing market.

“We are increasingly hearing about supply constraints and inflation – a mix of global supply chain disruption, Brexit impact flowing through – including in labour markets - and increased demand as building accelerates.

“Continued demand is on the horizon from regionalisation, reconfiguring outdated offices, regenerating high streets and communities along with funding new infrastructure for a post COVID world – from warehouses for distribution to data centres and digital infrastructure.  ESG is increasingly on agendas – be it energy efficient buildings or renewable energy and sustainable communities with affordable housing – all of which are in growth mode for good reason.

“Housing price inflation continues and will drive more to rent – helpful for the growing number of investors looking to deliver purpose built family housing for rent, but perhaps not for first time buyers who will be even more reliant on 95% mortgages if they are lucky enough to be able to find the money for the deposit.”
