Our latest results from the KPMG Fraud Barometer have just been published and cover 2018. The Barometer measures alleged fraud cases with losses of £100,000 or more reaching the UK courts and has been tracking fraud trends since the 1980s. The bi-annual Barometer identifies the latest fraud trends and patterns affecting the UK economy which helps businesses remain alert to new threats and respond to any fraud risks in an appropriate and proactive manner.

 

Highlights for 2018

The number of alleged fraud cases reaching courts in the UK in 2018 rose by 78% with 453 cases totalling a value of £1.2 billion. The barometer includes one supercase (a case greater than £50m), but there are a large volume of smaller value cases between £10 million and £50 million covering a broad sweep of areas such as evasion of duty, VAT fraud, investment fraud, loans and mortgages, counterfeit goods, pensions and social benefits.

  • The data shows a surge in volume and value of insurance fraud cases hitting court in 2018.
  • Value of fraud by rogue tradesman growing rapidlly, targeting the vulnerable to the value of £7m.
  • Evasion of duty and cross-border smuggling exceeded £89 million.
