We have pleasure in presenting and commenting on the financial results of the South African reinsurance industry for the 2016 financial year.
We will highlight some key aspects, ratios and events that impacted the industry as well as cast our eye toward the future and report on what we expect the next couple of years may hold in for the industry.
To fully grasp and appreciate the results that the industry reported it is key to understand the economic and political backdrop. Globally unexpected events such as Brexit and the Trump presidency created high levels of uncertainty and directly impacted local economic markets. In the table below we consider some of the positive and negative political, social and economic aspects which have an impact on the broader society and ultimately the subject at hand. It goes without saying that the political, social and economic environment influences the insurance customer and consequently the reinsurer.
