On August 26, the Brazilian authorities published a note (or “ordinance”) in the country’s official gazette confirming the extension of immigration deadlines and procedures until March 15, 2022.1

WHY THIS MATTERS

The extension should relieve individuals who have expired immigration documents that could not be used/updated in a timely manner due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The ordinance affects all foreign travelers who arrived in Brazil during the pandemic and remain currently in the country. It also affects employers and their globally-mobile employees as they now have an additional period to regularize their workforce and bring them into compliance.

More Details

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all foreign nationals who were unable to follow-up on required immigration procedures starting November 3, 2020, were originally authorized to complete them by March 16, 2021. Given the extension of the health emergency measures, the period for completing the necessary immigration procedures had then been extended until September 16, 2021. Now, the Brazilian authorities have extended this further, until March 15, 2022.2

The ordinance confirms that immigration documents which expired after March 16, 2020, will be considered valid and useable until March 15, 2022, if the foreign national is currently residing in Brazil and has not traveled for more than 30 days outside of Brazilian territory.

Additionally, it is important to note all foreign individuals who become regularized within the extended period will not be penalized for delays in undertaking necessary immigration procedures.
