KPMG report offers six practical strategies to help achieve successful partnerships, networks and alliances
As healthcare organizations around the world struggle to address growing volumes of patients, reduce per capita costs and improve the patient experience, collaboration in healthcare will now be essential to achieve sustainability, according to a new report launched by KPMG International, What Works: Partnerships, networks and alliances.
“The future of healthcare has emerged as a major topic around the world and there is no doubt, a successful hospital is a connected hospital,” said Dr. Mark Britnell, Chairman of KPMG International’s Global Healthcare Practice and Partner, KPMG in the UK. “Too often, leaders in healthcare organizations face the challenge of meeting narrow performance parameters such as short-term fiscal measures and operating processing targets. Our findings consistently support those who focus on the long-term vision, such as improving the health of their communities and can then evolve to achieve their strategic objectives.”
The report is based on 2 years of extensive research into healthcare consolidation and examines the pitfalls and success factors of partnerships, networks and alliances (PNA) projects from around the world. Highlighting six practical strategies such as - focus on quality over size or money, stronger payer-provider alliances, flexibility in decision-making - that together help organizations realize long-term success.
The report also includes a PNA maturity matrix that enables organizations to evaluate their progress and actions required to achieve a collaborative healthcare organization.
According to the lead author, Malcolm Lowe-Lauri, Partner, KPMG in Australia, “Time after time, we found the specific model of collaboration is less important than ensuring the ability of institutions and their professionals to come together seamlessly. Such integration is not simple; it requires healthcare organizations to commit to an environment of shared goals, and to put a stake in the PNA objectives. Without this buy-in, partnerships can devolve into focusing on issues within the network instead of achieving strategic objectives.”
