A hearing regarding political campaign and lobbying activities of tax-exempt organizations

A subcommittee of the Senate Finance Committee has scheduled for May 4, 2022, a public hearing regarding political campaign and lobbying activities of tax-exempt organizations.

The hearing will be conducted by the Finance Committee’s Subcommittee on Taxation and IRS Oversight. The hearing will provide an opportunity to examine the laws and enforcement governing the political activities of tax-exempt entities.

In advance of the hearing, the staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) today released a document providing:

  • An overview of present-law rules governing the political campaign and lobbying activities of tax-exempt organizations
  • A description of the present-law disclosure rules applicable to tax-exempt organizations
  • Data relating to tax-exempt organizations
