The CEWS program was established as a relief program in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and Canada’s government on 9 October 2020 announced new aspects of its plan to bolster Canada's economic recovery including that:

  • The current CEWS rate of up to a maximum of 65% of eligible wages will be maintained until 19 December 2020 (previously, this rate was scheduled to go down to a maximum of 45% effective 25 October 2020).
  • The CEWS subsidy will remain in place until June 2021.

The government also introduced a new Canada emergency rent subsidy and a “top-up” Canada emergency rent subsidy, and announced that the Canada emergency business account (CEBA) would be expanded.
