The IRS today issued a reminder for taxpayer-owners of heavy highway vehicles of the August 31, 2020 deadline for filing Form 2290, “Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return” and paying the related federal excise tax.
As noted in today’s IRS release—IR-2020-179 (August 13, 2020)—the highway use tax applies to highway motor vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more (in general, large trucks, truck tractors, and buses). The deadline to file Form 2290 and pay the tax is August 31, 2020, for vehicles used on the road during July 2020.
Taxpayers with 25 or more taxed vehicles must file electronically.
