The IRS today announced that individual taxpayers will have the option to electronically file tax year 2019 Forms 1040 and 1040-SR amended returns on Form 1040-X using commercial tax-filing software.
The IRS release—IR-2020-182 (August 17, 2020)—explains that until now, taxpayers filing Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, had to submit paper versions of the return. With today’s announcement, individual taxpayers will be able to correct previously filed tax returns by electronically filing Form 1040-X.
Only tax year 2019 Forms 1040 and 1040-SR returns will be able to be amended electronically during this initial implementation phase.
Taxpayers will still have the option to submit a paper version of the Form 1040-X under today’s announcement.
