South Africa: Tax filing season, individual taxpayers

The Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) on 5 May 2020 announced changes to the 2019/2020 tax filing season for individual taxpayers.

The tax filing season will have three phases (instead of the two phases—an “employer filing season” and an “employee filing season”—under prior tax seasons).

The employer filing season (now referred to as phase 1) requires employers to submit their annual employer reconciliations (EMP501s) to SARS by 31 May each year; this remains unchanged in relation to the 2019/2020 filing season.
