New Zealand: Possible economic outcomes of “lockdown”

The New Zealand Treasury on 14 April 2020 released the outcome of possible “lockdown” scenario in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

  • One proposal addresses the economic effects of being at “COVID-19 Alert Level 4” for the minimum four weeks, followed by Alert Level 3 for a month and then a combination of Alert Levels 1 and 2 for another 10 months.
  • Another proposal would have COVID-19 Alert Level 4 for six months followed by Alert Level 3 for another six months.
  • A number of intermediate situations are considered, with New Zealand moving between the various Alert Levels over short periods of time.

Note that these are not forecasts, and that the Treasury release emphasises uncertainty.
