Business continues to wait for levelling up policies

KPMG’s Head of Regions, Chris Hearld comments on the Prime Minister’s levelling up speech

Commenting on the Prime Minister’s levelling up speech today, KPMG’s Head of Regions, Chris Hearld said:

“The Prime Minister is right to stress that levelling up is a win-win. Creating the conditions for productive economic growth in the UK’s regions, to act as a counter-balance to London and the South East will indeed benefit the whole country.

“But achieving this is a long term, structural mission that needs comprehensive place-based policy commitments, encompassing skills, innovation, focused investment on growth sectors, leveraging engaged and powerful devolved regional government.

“Business is the driver of employment and prosperity across the country but continues to wait for policies designed to encourage long term investment and productivity in areas that have underperformed for many years, holding the UK back from its potential.”
