KPMG UK has announced the appointment of Chris Townsend OBE as its new head of infrastructure, government and healthcare (IGH).
Chris Townsend is a highly experienced commercial senior executive with more than 25 years’ experience delivering major technology and infrastructure projects within the UK.
In his new role, Chris will lead the firm’s IGH practice where he will be responsible for the strategy and growth of the business including the firm’s support for the Government and wider public sector in responding to the COVID-19 crisis.
Chris formerly undertook a voluntary role as CEO for the COVID-19 Shielding Programme, designed to protect 2.25million Clinically Extremely Vulnerable NHS patients in England from the coronavirus pandemic.
Previously, he was responsible for all commercial activities and revenue for Chelsea Football Club as Commercial Director. Prior to that, he was appointed Chief Executive of Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) in April 2014 and oversaw a £1 billion Government investment in improving broadband internet access and mobile infrastructure.
Before joining BDUK, Chris was Commercial Director for the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) from 2006-2012. He was responsible for raising £2.4 billion to fund the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games for which he received an OBE in 2013.
Previously as Group Marketing Director at Transport for London, Chris led the launch and marketing of the Oyster card. Further prior roles include Director of Interactive Services at Telewest Broadband where he developed the company’s digital TV services, and Marketing Director for BSkyB, where he led the marketing launch of Sky’s subscription channels, including Sky Sports, Sky Movies, and Pay Per View. Chris was also jointly responsible for the planning and implementation of the launch of Sky Digital TV.
