“The UK ranks fourth in the world when it comes to creating the right conditions for a home-grown AI industry to flourish. The decades of big data held by the NHS represents perhaps the UK’s single biggest opportunity to advance that position and develop world-beating applications.

“We see huge opportunities around healthcare outcomes and productivity. These could redress some of the pressures on the NHS that will only grow with an ageing population. These opportunities have the potential to give the UK a global competitive advantage that will suck in more resources, international talent and investment. This in turn could drive growth in SME companies working on health data and finally spread AI employment beyond the London to Cambridge corridor.

“To release the full benefit of AI, we need a much more widely understood and supported conversation about the way NHS data is collected, stored and used to improve patient outcomes and taxpayer value for money.

“We mustn’t let the fear of innovation into the unknown slow down what could be the UK’s greatest advantage in AI.”
