The time is now: Are you a Metalsmith or ‘Gridmaster’? - Hourglass

The emergence of electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles and Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is disrupting most sectors, but at its core is the impact on the traditional automotive industry.

Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), who have employed a consistent business model for 100 years, are now on the cusp of an unprecedented period of disruption. Many say they want to become mobility providers, but time is running out to capitalise on new opportunities. OEMs must determine the role they want to play in the emerging future of mobility and pivot their business model accordingly.

Our report The time is now: Are you a Metalsmith or 'Gridmaster'? explores the two business model approaches that OEMs could take:

  1. Metalsmiths: Manufacturing ever more sophisticated vehicles, but ceding the customer interface to mobility providers. Such OEMs could build successful collaborations with on-demand mobility service providers to source vehicles into their fleets at scale.
  2. Gridmasters: Under this business model, OEMs may continue to manufacture vehicles, but critically will also provide platforms for a variety of mobility services. Such OEMs could collaborate with other OEMs to co-develop new technologies.
