The total volume of tobacco consumption in Australia during 2017 was 15.6 million kg. Compared to 2016, total volume decreased by 6.1%, as declining legal consumption of manufactured cigarettes offset a rise in loose tobacco.
Total consumption of illicit tobacco declined by 1.0%. However this represents an increase in the proportion of consumption from 14.3% in 2016 to 15.0% in 2017.
Over the last 12 months, contraband consumption increased whilst consumption of unbranded tobacco and counterfeit declined.
