Employment is proven to reduce reoffending rates – but many offenders struggle to find work on release. Can we reimagine a new approach that provides the skills and experience they need?
For those who have served a prison sentence re-entering society presents numerous challenges, the largest being finding employment on release.
The struggle to secure employment often leads to reoffending. The UK’s present reoffending rate is too high, with over a third of those released from prison being convicted of another offence within 12 months. Many prisons currently offer vocational training; however this can only take people so far.
Could a reimagined approach, focused on building skills that reach beyond the confines of the prison wall, help break this cycle? Could prisoners live and work off the prison site and build skills, experience and networks?
