At KPMG, we strongly believe that diversity is a reality but that inclusion is a choice.  We know that in order to create the most diverse and innovative workforce that meets the needs not only of our clients but of our colleagues, we need to move away from same thinking and encourage our employees to “bring their whole selves to work”.  Supporting our internal networks plays a large part in this, and in return for this support the networks provide guidance to our colleagues, collaboration with our clients and our communities and championship of causes that are important to all of us.

We are delighted to be listed in the top ten of the Stonewall Workplace Equality index (WEI) which is seen as one of the most powerful benchmarking tools used by employers to measure equality in the workplace for lesbian, gay, bi and trans employees.  This achievement is in no small part down to the work of our LGBT network – Breathe, alongside its sponsors and allies.  Breathe was formed in 2003 and provides a forum for colleagues to learn about and debate LGBT topics, members of the network also provide consultation to the firm, most recently on KPMG’s transgender policies.

However one of the most important business functions provided by the network is collaboration through external networks with our clients and communities. As an example, from relationships developed through one of our LGBT client networks KPMG has been able to foster an ongoing partnership that will see millions generated over the lifetime of the relationship.  Breathe is also one of the founding members of the Alliance Network, a newly formed professional network made up of a core committee of LGBT leaders within Midlands based Professional Services organisations – the goal is to offer support and networking opportunities to other LGBT professionals in the Midlands, as well as organising relevant thought leadership events, sharing best practice and providing platform to promote LGBT equality in the workplace.

This kind of collaboration is invaluable, especially when you consider that this is done outside of the network members day jobs.  Opportunities can be lost when businesses do not take inclusivity seriously, if individuals are unable to express their true selves at work then you are not getting the most from your employees.  At KPMG we value a culture of inclusive leadership where support for diversity is given from the top down.  Back in 2014 we published diversity targets in relation to gender, ethnicity, disability and sexual orientation, and in December we became the first organisation to publish detailed social mobility information for our UK staff.  We are strongly committed to continuously improving our culture, and although we are far from perfect, I am proud to say we are heading in the right direction.
