Regulating telcos after Brexit

No one knows just how radically Brexit could change the regulation of Britain's telecoms market. Talks between London and Brussels haven't happened yet. But KPMG's regulatory telecoms expert Sean Kennedy draws a few early conclusions.

  • It is likely the UK will develop a similar stand-alone regulatory framework to the EU's in the next few years.
  • There is a risk that UK regulators will have less ability to deal with any issue involving global players post-Brexit.
  • Leaving the EU and relaxing state aid rules may help the UK Government tackle mobile 'not-spot' areas and also reach the 'last 5' for fixed broadband networks.
  • Once the UK has left the EU it could adopt a more interventionist approach to network rollout.
