On 20-22 June Saint Petersburg was the venue for the International Economic Forum (SPIEF), which serves annually as a platform for the leaders of the global economy and politics to discuss topical issues of the modern age.  KPMG played an active role both in the work of the actual Forum, and also in the events of the Business 20 Summit (B20), which was held on 20 June as part of SPIEF 2013.

Chairman of KPMG International Michael Andrew was a speaker at two B20 sessions – Investments and Infrastructure and Transparency and Anti-Corruption, and also on the SPIEF panel session on the reform of the global financial system.

Michael noted that the fact that the G20 had been implementing a large number of global political initiatives during Russia’s chairmanship had a very favorable impression on international investors, adding assuredly: “Such issues as the anti-corruption drive, transparency requirements, infrastructure aspects are key agenda items of this forum, and this in itself is already making international investors confident about the transformations that are starting to happen in the Russian economy.”

Oleg Goshchansky, Chairman and Senior Partner, KPMG in Russia and the CIS, participated in the panel sessions of the SPIEF dedicated to Russia’s role in the global agenda – Knowledge-Based Economy – A Strategy for Getting Ahead of the Curve and Role of the Regions at a Time of Macro-Economic Changes. According to Oleg, the most important factor of global integration today is the ability to accumulate intellectual resources and leverage innovation-based potential. Oleg Goshchansky said: “The creation of innovative products, technologies and know-how – this will guarantee Russia a fitting place in the global economy.”

KPMG’s Senior Partner also highlighted the importance of attracting foreign investments to develop Russian regions and shared some of the results of joint research conducted by KPMG and the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RSPP) dedicated to analysis of the investment climate in Russian regions.

As well as participating in the Forum’s business program, KPMG also supported an informal event held by the radio station Business FM – “Voice-festival Business-Singing”. The evening proceeded in a karaoke competition format: the participants - businessmen and politicians  - were asked to select a song from one of three categories. According to all accounts, BFM’s guests justified the motto of the event and showed that “business in Russia has a voice”. KPMG, the official sponsor of the Bolshoi Theater from next season, awarded the winners in the nomination “Russian Rock” tickets to the premiere as part of the September tour of the Paris Opera.

Within the framework of SPIEF KPMG’s experts also shared their opinions on the development prospects of the economy with leading mass media outlets.
