KPMG’s new partners:
Riria Te Kanawa (Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Rārua, Tainui-o-Tainui, Ngāti Koata, Ngāti Porou) – National Industry Lead – Māori, Hamilton
Riria has lead KPMG’s service and contribution to the Māori sector since starting at the firm in 2015. She has over 25 years’ experience, firstly as a chartered accountant and then as a strategist and change agent as business consultant. She is the lead author of KPMG’s Maui Rau report series that looks at how Māori might take advantage of the shifts in the world to advance prosperity for their people. Her clients appreciate her ability to help them structure their thinking to bring clarity, craft smart solutions with them rather than for them, and to quickly get to the heart of the issue. Her clients trust that she understands their context and dynamics and is known for providing appropriate challenges that provoke the thought needed to bring about innovative approaches. Her background and experience as a business owner, and governor on multiple entities including her hapū incorporation, iwi trust board and large research and commercialisation entity enables her to bring pragmatic and alternative viewpoints
Riria’s promotion to partnership follows recent appointments which make up the firm’s Māori leadership team: Vincent Campbell (Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngāti Pūkenga) as the firm's Pou Ahurea (Māori Cultural Advisor), Consulting Director Tiare Otene (Ngāpuhi, Te Rarawa), Technology Consulting Partner Rachael Niao, (Ngāti Awa, Tuhoe, Ngāti Porou and Te Arawa) and Government Consulting Partner Kaapua Smith (Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Apa, Ngāti Awa).
"We are committed to building the firm’s cultural intelligence and Riria has played a significant role in behind the scenes getting us to where we are today, and we're now well positioned to make a stronger impact - starting with our people,” says Boyce.
