KPMG Cyber presents the KPMG Cyber Challenge, New Zealand’s largest cyber security competition.
No matter what the skill level of participants (from beginner through to experienced professionals), or what areas of cyber security are of interest, the KPMG Cyber Challenge has something for everyone.
Powered by Immersive Labs, the KPMG Cyber Challenge uses the same platform used to train the likes of intelligence agencies, international technology companies and major financial institutions.
Over the period of a week, you’ll pit your skills against your choice of over 750 practical and knowledge-based capture-the-flag style exercises as you compete to top the leaderboard.
You’ll compete against New Zealand’s best as you work your way through a variety of cyber security challenges, covering everything from security risk management and security awareness, through to ransomware, secure coding and vulnerability exploitation. The challenges are designed so that all skill levels have the potential to win.
The KPMG Cyber Challenge is open to all IT professionals and tertiary cyber security students in New Zealand and will run from 6pm on Friday 19 June 2020 through to 6pm on Friday 26 June 2020.
Registrations are open from now to 18 June at https://register.kpmgcyberchallenge.co.nz

Q: I’m only new to cyber security, will I be able to compete against others with much more experience?
The challenges cater for all skill levels, including those very new to cyber security. The challenges are also designed to develop your skills as you complete them. The challenges outline the experience they are designed for, allowing you to choose the ones that best suit you.
Q: What range of topics do the challenges cover
The 750+ challenges cover a wide variety of subject matters and skills, including Linux and Windows security concepts, threat intelligence, reverse engineering, security awareness, encryption, malware analysis, privacy, threat hunting, security frameworks, ransomware, SQL injection, security risk management, incident response, penetration testing, computer forensics, vulnerability exploitation, topics presented at Black Hat and other conferences, and a lot more.
Q: Are the challenges just online quizzes like a lot of CBT (Computer Based Training) courses?
No, not at all. While there are some knowledge based challenges, the majority of the challenges provide you Linux and/or Windows based virtual machines to complete the challenges with. The challenges are delivered using a capture the flag approach.
Q: Do I need to install anything or have anything specific to be able to compete?
No, everything is delivered via a web browser.
Q: Is there a maximum number of people who can be involved?
Registration is limited to 1,000 people. Running up to 3,000 virtual machines at once takes a fair bit of effort and resources, so I’m afraid we’ve had to cap the numbers.
Q: I’m not located in New Zealand, can I participate?
I’m afraid not. The competition is limited to people residing in New Zealand.
Q: If I’m one of the winners, can I exchange the prize for the cash equivalent?
No, sorry. While our team would love to keep and use the prizes (and we’ve had to hide them from the team), the cash equivalent isn’t offered.
Q: Will I be able to tell how well I’m doing during the competition
A leaderboard is maintained in real time during the competition, outlining the total score achieved to date for everyone participating.
