Field Notes, powered by KPMG, is a weekly news update on news nationally and globally from the agri-food sector.
Zespri Chief Executive Dan Mathieson has reported that the prospects for this season’s kiwifruit are looking good, as strong demand remains for fresh fruit, particularly those with a high vitamin C content and a protective skin like kiwifruit. The complications of social distancing have been sorted at most kiwifruit packhouses. Entering week 18, Zespri has reported it has delivered 10.6 million trays to consumers, which is up 2.7 million on the corresponding point last year. Chief Grower and Alliances Officer Dave Courtney stated that the sector has faced a good run of weather and early ripening fruit which has helped with harvesting and processing, allowing a good flow. Distribution is relatively normal, apart from a few disruptions in supply chains. Zespri expects to deliver 21m trays by mid-May, putting the industry 4m trays ahead of the corresponding time last year.
