Garth is a health and safety professional with over fourteen years’ experience in developing, managing, assessing and consulting on health and safety management systems across both the private and public sectors. Governance, contractor management, health and wellbeing, operational risk management and incident management are areas in which Garth has assessed performance. In the last few years, work-related mental health has become an increasing focus of his work and personal research.
Garth joined KPMG in mid-2016 after working for WorkSafe New Zealand. He was the Industry Adviser for the adventure activities sector, then an assessor on the pilot phase of the Safety Star Rating Scheme. The pilot was successful. The Scheme was launched in November 2017 as SafePlus. Garth was one of the first people to be accredited as a SafePlus Assessor for this Government-endorsed, performance improvement toolkit.
In 2020, Garth was engaged in a project to assist a South American country restructure and strengthen its legislation and frameworks for adventure tourism safety. The work involved developing case studies, mechanisms and strategies and was a continuation (of a sort) to the work he carried out for the New Zealand and international adventure tourism sector and for ISO.
Before WorkSafe, Garth was the General Manager of a national auditing programme. In that role he was involved as an auditor and certifier in over 600 external audits. He was also instrumental in the development and implementation of the Health and Safety at Work (Adventure Activities) Regulations, one of WorkSafe’s main priority areas in 2014.
