The energy transition and legislation are compelling companies to strategically re-assess their conventional asset portfolio. This could be, for example, coal plants that need to be converted to bio-mass or closed earlier in a cash effective manner. Additionally, assets like gas fired power plants or gas storage will perhaps have a different role going forward or require adjustments due to events such as phasing out of Groningen gas field production. Similar challenges are also due for oil & gas assets off-shore where a combination of large-scale wind energy projects with hydrogen and carbon capture storage could be an alternative way to reuse the existing infrastructure. This, however would require governmental steering to allow use of existing infrastructure for a new application.
