The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) on Monday, 13 May 2019 notified the public of migration of application for visa on arrival (VOA) to a web-based portal with immediate effect.
According to the NIS, the initiative will improve migration and transparency in the visa application system in line with the Federal Government’s Ease of Doing Business Policy.
Before now, the NIS received VOA applications through electronic mails or hard copy documents submitted to the Comptroller General of Immigration for approval. However, with the new web-based regime, applicants are required to complete relevant application form on the NIS website (www.immigration.gov.ng) using Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome browsers, make payment (using MasterCard and Visa payment cards) and obtain online visa approval.
Based on the change, the following documents are required to process a VOA application:
The estimated time for VOA approval is 48 hours after submission by the applicant. This is barring teething problems that may be associated with migration to the electronic platform for processing VOA applications.
While this is a welcome development for business, the NIS should take the next bold step of extending VOA to tourists to improve visitors’ experience to the country.
