In sub-Saharan Africa, the lack of good quality primary school education is a major concern. It is generally believed that education is the key to national development and there is a need to maintain high quality of education especially at the primary stage, because it is the foundation upon which all other educational levels build. Once a child misses that early stage, it is usually difficult for the learner to get back to the basics. Record shows that half of the total primary school population will reach adolescence without the basic skills required to achieve successful lives.
As response to this societal imbalance, 13 KPMG volunteers came together to partake in the Back To School Project 2017 in conjunction with the United for Kids Foundation (UKF). This programme is in line with KPMG's commitment to improving communities.
Two public primary schools were visited, namely; Wesley Primary School and Ijebu-Tedo Primary School, Lagos where we interacted with the pupils. As part of our contribution, 638 students received various gift items such as school bags and Back-To-School packs. The resources donated will aid the students in their studies and help to stir up their confidence as they work through the school year.
The KPMG employee volunteers also spent time talking to the children, encouraging and inspiring them to work hard with the hopes of achieving their dreams and a bright future. This was an extremely rewarding experience and we look forward to many more opportunities to serve our community in the near future.
Below you will find some pictures capturing our time volunteering at the various schools.
