2020 Budget – Indirect Tax

On 11 October 2019, the honorable Minister of Finance, YB Tuan Lim Guan Eng tabled the much anticipated 2020 Budget.

Despite the widespread speculation on the reintroduction of Goods and Services Tax (“GST”) , it was clarified that the Government has no intention to bring back the tax.

Set out below are some of the notable proposals announced in the 2020 Budget in relation to Indirect Tax:-

·  Introduction of Approved Major Exporter Scheme for export-oriented companies in Malaysia.

·  Group relief for Service Tax exemption to be applicable, despite provision of same taxable services to third parties (subject to 5% threshold).

·  Training and coaching services for disabled persons be exempted from Service Tax.

·  50% Excise Duty exemption on tourism vehicles.

·  Introduction of Customs Duties deferred payment facility.

·  A reduction of 0.5% and 1.5% in the Export Duty rate on Crude Palm Oil.

·  Entertainments Duty exemption be given on admission tickets for stage performances held at any venue in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.
