Sales Tax and Service Tax ("SST") Go Live
Whilst SST go live on 1 September 2018, just like the implementation of any new system, there may still be a number of teething issues to deal with. Businesses should be on the lookout for any development and further clarifications from the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (“RMCD”).
Amongst others, from time to time, the RMCD posts announcements on its SST official website (MySST) to convey important messages to businesses. For instance, on 1 September 2018, the RMCD announced that certain applications for exemption from payment of sales tax need to be done manually, instead of electronically. The manual Forms are available on MySST website.
The RMCD also continues to issue new or revised Guides to provide clarifications on the SST treatments relating to various transactions. To date, there are more than 20 Guides available on MySST website, including the General Guides, Registration Guides and industry specific Guides.
