Sales Tax and Service Tax: The Journey So Far
It has been approximately 2.5 years since Malaysia had re-introduced Sales Tax and Service Tax (commonly known as “SST”) in replacing the Goods and Services Tax (“GST”). Though it is dubbed to be an “old-and-yet-new” tax, many still face challenges to grasp the concept of both single-staged taxes, especially when one was only starting to get comfortable with GST.
Coupled with the short implementation time frame given, many businesses were affected with not only reporting issues, but also interpretational issues due to the ambiguity in the relevant legislations.
So, the crucial question is really – did you get it right?
