KPMG appoints five Directors

KPMG has appointed Alex Azzopardi, Claude Ellul, Simon Xuereb, Giselle Borg and Sarah Camilleri as Directors, with effect from 1 January 2016. This reflects the continued growth that the firm has achieved in 2015 and which is expected to be sustained in the coming years.

Alex Azzopardi

Alex joined KPMG Malta in 2005 after successfully completing his Bachelor of Accountancy (Hons) Degree at the University of Malta. Following a number of years working within the Audit function, he joined the Risk Consulting Advisory team in 2013. He is an accountant by profession, holds the Practising Certificate in Auditing and is also a Certified Information Systems Auditor. Alex is a Fellow of the Malta Institute of Accountants (MIA) and a member of the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA).  

Through his career at KPMG Malta, Alex obtained extensive experience in auditing, risk consulting advisory and internal audit. He currently leads the firm’s provision of Internal Audit Services to a diversified portfolio of local and international clients. He is also involved in the provision of regulatory advisory services to a number of banking and insurance clients. Alex has regularly provided technical training on a number of subjects including financial reporting standards and regulation. He currently serves as Secretary to the Committee of the Malta Forum for Internal Auditors.

Claude Ellul

Claude joined KPMG’s Audit function in 2003. He has specialised in the financial services sector, in the banking segment in particular. 

Throughout his career at KPMG, Claude has been involved in a number of advisory engagements through which he brought to bear his extensive experience in the financial services sector. 

Claude holds a Masters in Financial Services and is a fellow of the Malta Institute of Accountants.

Simon Xuereb

Simon, graduated as a lawyer, obtaining his LL.D in 2009 and his warrant to practice as an Advocate before the superior Courts in Malta in 2010.  He rejoined KPMG in 2011 following a brief absence during which he successfully completed his post-graduate specialization in International Taxation, obtaining an adv. LL.M in International Taxation from Leiden University, Netherlands. 

Simon has been actively involved in the ongoing development and broadening of KPMG in Malta’s Private Client and Global Mobility Services offering and today leads a multi-disciplinary team of professionals in this space. He is also actively involved in the development of this service offering at a global level and currently chairs the High-Net Worth Migration Working Group for KPMG. 

He is a regular lecturer, examiner and supervisor on various tax related courses in Malta and also a visiting lecturer on the advanced international tax planning course at Leiden University. He co-authored the Malta chapter in the renowned international publication, “International Corporate Procedures” by Jordan Publishing.

Giselle Borg

Giselle works in the Audit department with an industry focus on insurance and pensions.  She has led a variety of audit and assurance services for life insurers, non-life insurers, reinsurers and personal pensions schemes and brings over 12 years of experience. Giselle was seconded to the insurance audit department in KPMG London and works closely within the KPMG network in servicing multi-national clients. She is actively involved in the delivery of technical accounting presentations to clients, regulatory bodies and other mid-tier audit firms on a regular basis.  She is also a key member in training delivery at KPMG, actively contributing to staff’s professional education and performance development. 

Sarah Camilleri

Sarah joined KPMG ‘s Advisory Department in 2013, to drive the Investment Service and Funds’ offering across Audit, Tax and Advisory within the firm. Sarah is very active in the investment Services realm in Malta, assisting a number of clients with their local operation. She also forms part of ad-hoc technical committees, and speaks at conferences organised both locally and overseas. Sarah is also a committee member of the Malta Funds Industry Association, and a member of the IFSP. 

Prior to  joining KPMG, Sarah worked as an Associate Director at UBS Fund Services (Luxembourg) S.A, and formed part of the Board of Directors on a number of UBS Luxembourg Real Estate Funds and SPVs, with AUM of over EUR 1billion.
