Stephan Piazza is a lawyer working within the Transport (Shipping and Aviation) sub-function. He assists a varied client portfolio, including international ship-owners and credit institutions in all maritime law aspects such as Ship and Super-Yacht Registration, Shipping Compliance, Shipping Sale & Purchase and Ship Finance. In addition to the pure Flag of Choice and Registration advisory role, Stephan also advises shipping groups on the adoption of efficient tax structures and practices on the basis of their governance and market requirements. Stephan provides assistance in connection with the registration of aircraft and AOC application with the Civil Aviation Directorate at Transport Malta, advice upon the local and EU legal framework concerning drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles, and is also able to provide support in aircraft financing transactions.Stephan’s aim is that of identifying new opportunities for KPMG’s transport clients as well as bridging the gap with the Maltese Regulator at Transport Malta and other industry stakeholders. His role is also that of constantly updating KPMG’s transport clients with recent regulatory changes adopted at an IMO, European and local level. Stephan attends and speaks at high profile seminars and conferences both locally and abroad in order to keep himself and the whole team abreast with recent market trends and developments. Stephan lectures ACCA students in the field of corporate law and is warranted to practice law in front of the Superior Courts of Malta. He is also an Executive Committee Member of the Malta Maritime Law Association which forms part of the Comite’ Maritime International and a counsel member of the SuperYacht Malta Industry Network and a member of the European Maritime Law Organisationa. Also through the Malta Maritime Law Association, Stephan is actively involved in legal drafting at a local level. He has also published a number of articles in both local and international journals. He collaborates with the University of Malta and the Malta College of Arts Science and Technology as an external examiner and has delivered lectures at the ELSA Malta Summer Law School.
