On June 30, the Brazilian authorities published a note in the country’s Official Gazette extending the restriction on foreign nationals entering in Brazil for 30 more days.1  The extended restriction will last until July 30.

However, there is some flexibility as far as exemptions go, which allow, for example, for the entry of:

  • certain foreign nationals who come to Brazil by air with a work visa or a visitor visa (i.e., for short stays) already stamped on their passports, or
  • those who come for artistic, sports, or business activities, when a visitor visa is not required.

Before boarding an airplane, the individuals will need to present to the airline company a medical declaration issued by the health/sanitary authority or by a doctor attesting that they are not infected by SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19).

WHY THIS MATTERS

Efforts to introduce greater flexibility regarding travel and visa/passport services demonstrate initial steps toward a re-opening of Brazil’s borders and rebooting of its economy in the near future.

However, until such time as the government decides it is safe to rescind, or in a bigger way roll-back current restrictions, remote working is a “best practice” for globally-mobile employees – apart from “essential workers” – to the extent possible, and is a way for employers to foster the safety of their employees and help ensure business continuity.

More Details

Entering through Specific Airports

Entry into the country will be allowed only via the following international airports: Governador André Franco Montoro Airport (Guarulhos/Sao Paulo), Tom Jobim – Galeão Airport (Rio de Janeiro/Rio de Janeiro), Viracopos Airport (Campinas/Sao Paulo), and Presidente Juscelino Kubitschek Airport (Brasilia/Federal District).

Brazilian Passport Issuance

Recently, Brazil’s Federal Police resumed the issuance of Brazilian passports for urgent situations, and when the applicant presents his or her flight tickets for the trip.
