Chile – Travel Restrictions, Border Closure Extended
On April 14, Chile’s government further extended travel restrictions by keeping the country’s borders closed until April 22. Certain individuals will still be permitted to enter and leave Chile. And despite the border closure, entry and departure of cargo or freight/transport services will still be possible.
On April 14, Chile’s government further extended travel restrictions by keeping the country’s borders closed until April 22.1 This measure aims to protect the Chilean population by controlling and preventing the further spread of COVID-19.2 (For prior coverage, see GMS Flash Alert 2020-074, March 19, 2020).
WHY THIS MATTERS
The extension of the travel restrictions will continue to impact on employers and their globally-mobile employees moving between Chile and other countries.
Until the government decides it is safe to rescind or roll back the current restrictions, remote working is a “best practice” for globally-mobile employees, to the extent possible, and is a way for employers to foster the safety of their employees and help ensure business continuity.
Main Measures Affecting Foreigners
To further the measures put in place as of March 18 by Chile’s government in respect of travel restrictions and related to the closing of land, maritime, and air borders to all foreign nationals, it has now been announced that the borders will remain closed through April 22. It is important to mention that the extension of the period for border closures will not affect the entry or departure of cargo or freight/transport services. The purpose of the aforementioned is to continue ensuring a “normal” supply of goods for the country.
Chilean nationals and foreign nationals with Chilean residency status will be permitted to enter Chile but will be subject to a mandatory 14-day quarantine from the date of entry into Chile, without regard of the country of origin.
As for maritime travelers, from March 15 until September 30, all ports are closed for cruise-liners.3
