Argentine authorities announced on 29 March the extension of the mandatory “lock down,” for the entire country – which was due to expire 31 March – until 12 April.1

The extension of the lock-down policy aims to protect the Argentine population and control and prevent the further spread of COVID-19. (For prior coverage, see GMS Flash Alert 2020-105 (24 March 2020).)

WHY THIS MATTERS

The restrictions on travel and movement of people will have considerable impact on Argentina’s economy and society, and employers need to continually monitor their personnel and work arrangements.

This could cause additional anxiety, stress, and inconvenience, but the extension of the prohibition to avoid the circulation of the virus among the population is deemed extremely necessary and in the interest of protecting public health and safety.

Any individuals impacted by the new rules may wish to consult with their global mobility advisers and immigration legal counsel as soon as possible for advice on next steps.

KPMG NOTE

Clients should be aware of this extension as Argentina is essentially isolating itself from the world in order to prioritize the population’s health and safety.  Expatriate employees and their families needing to leave Argentina should contact their travel agents and global mobility professionals, and check with their embassies or consulates.
