KPMG Consulting and Keio University SFC to offer an endowed course for esports business learning

KPMG Consulting Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Masahiro Miyahara, hereinafter “KPMG Consulting”) has partnered with Keio University (Location: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Akira Haseyama) to offer an endowed course titled Understanding Esports, continuing from last year’s at the Keio University Shonan Fujisawa Campus under the same title. The course will cover topics such as the development of esports management talent and esports-specific business perspectives.

In recent years, esports has been gaining attention rapidly in Japan. While the number of people competing in video games increases, there are concerns that there will be a shortage of management personnel in order to develop the market as a sustainable industry in the future. In addition to the entry of new companies, esports is essential for the future development of new sports industries such as the establishment of professional teams and holding large-scale events. It is essential to develop human resources who will be responsible for management, such as ensuring the transparency of teams and event operators and collaborating with foreign organizations.

Amid the shortage of management human resources in esports-related organizations, KPMG Consulting will develop an educational curriculum for developing management human resources in companies and operating organizations, and will also discuss the use of advanced technology analysis methods in esports in the endowed "Understanding Esports" course at Keio University SFC.

Endowed Course Overview

In this course, technology professionals from KPMG Consulting will give lectures on the fusion of advanced technologies such as data analytics, AR (augmented reality)/VR (virtual reality)/MR (mixed reality) and esports competition. The course will also cover research subjects such as “sports and esports”, “game content entertainment and esports”, “event sponsorship and esports”, and “mass communication fan players and esports” with the aim to create a novel esports culture unique to Japan by investigating the latest situation and case studies of esports in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
In addition to taking full advantage of the industry and technology expertise by KPMG professionals, the course will feature a wide range of domain-specific instructors from companies and organizations already involved in esports business, aiming for more practical content.
