The last five years have seen the largest ever investment into cities and towns in India by the Central Government. On one hand it has helped in creating a significant amount of urban infrastructure and provided the opportunity to explore new technological solutions that allow cities to be imagined as a productive, living organism that promotes ‘livability’ within its residents and helps them achieve their full potential as productive members of the society. However, on the other hand it has also helped local Governments understand their own shortcomings and limitations which should be overcome in the course of widening and deepening the efforts to the rest of urban India. Smart cities are here to stay – and this report is a humble attempt to provide insights into the lessons learnt, challenges and opportunities for future expansion of the scheme.
