Vietnam trekkers

Two adventurers from KPMG Isle of Man have braved a 6 day trek in the Vietnam jungle to raise nearly £6,000 for Junior Achievement (JA) Isle of Man.

Simon Nicholas, a Partner at the firm and Elaine McCormack, Senior Manager took on the 58 mile challenge, starting at the city of Hanoi and travelling through jungle, rice fields and remote villages in the mountainous area of southeast Hanoi. They joined a group of 16 trekkers from the island on the 2019 charity trek, which included JA Senior Programme Manager Joy Spence.

Simon commented, “The trek was a challenge of a lifetime and while it pushed me beyond my comfort zone, I would do it again in a heart beat. Having recently been appointed to the board of JA, I’m very proud to support the charity and look forward to continue working with the team here to help prepare the island’s young people to enter the increasingly competitive business world.”

Elaine commented, “Vietnam has been on my travel bucket list for some time, but I’ve never quite got round to fitting it in. When I saw that JA were organising a charity trek there, it seemed like a great way for me to experience some of the less touristy parts of Vietnam, whilst raising money for a very valuable local charity.”

KPMG staff were invited to purchase felt tip pens to be handed out to children in the villages, where such supplies are difficult or impossible to source. Through their generous donations, over 200 pens were handed out at a local nursery and fun was had drawing smiley faces before returning to the trek once more.

Sue Cook, CEO of Junior Achievement, said, “To take on a trek this demanding requires dedication and commitment. We are extremely grateful to Simon and Elaine for taking on this challenge to raise money for Junior Achievement. The funds will be used to support our work in schools to help young people develop employability skills”.
