Circular models focus on minimising resource inputs and waste outputs

Advantages of the circular economy approach

Traditional or ‘linear’ models of product manufacture, ownership and disposal are being re-examined because of their cost and environmental impacts. In contrast, circular models focus on minimising resource inputs, minimising waste outputs and wherever possible using waste materials as inputs to production processes. There are increasing advantages to this approach:

  • Avoided costs as efficient processes, particularly those based on re-processed waste use less energy to produce primary inputs
  • Reduced environmental impacts and production waste as fewer waste by-products are created if extract or primary production is minimised
  • Avoided disposal costs where a waste product from one process can be effectively re-used as an input to a secondary process

KPMG’s Sustainable Futures team can assist your business in the following areas:

  • Economic and environmental modelling to quantify the impact of an organisation’s supply chain and assess leakages
  • Benchmarking businesses against international best-in-class practice for that sector
  • Circularity strategy and implementation: prioritising opportunities, assessing the business case for individual initiatives and sourcing potential partners
