KPMG helps clients in developing a decarbonisation strategy to reduce the carbon emissions from their operations and make net-zero emissions targets easier to achieve. We create a strategy that is integrally aligned with business objectives, embedded in the organisation’s operating model, and supports its adaptability to the physical, regulatory and stakeholder challenges of climate change.

Main steps in developing a decarbonisation strategy:

  1. Current state assessment: KPMG examines the organisation’s goals and expectations, the impacts of Hungarian and EU legislative and topic-related policy environment as well as industry best practices as a starting point for strategy development.

  2. Emission source analysis and carbon footprint calculation: We analyse the main sources of carbon emissions (e.g. buildings, equipment, vehicles, processes) for the organisation’s direct (Scope 1 and 2) and, if required, indirect (Scope 3) emissions, and use the internationally agreed GHG Protocol methodology to calculate a carbon footprint for an emissions baseline.

  3. Mapping potential actions: Based on the analysis of emission sources we identify a list of emission-reduction measures, which is then compared and prioritised based on a cost-benefit analysis. The analysis produces a list of measures in order of priority, and a high-level estimate of investment and return on investment.

  4. Developing a decarbonisation strategy: Relying on KPMG’s strategic framework, we work closely with the organisation’s senior management and specialist managers to prepare the strategy and the key elements needed to implement it. As part of this, we define the mission, vision and high-level goals, detail the objectives and actions, and develop a roadmap as well as action plan for the implementation.

KPMG can provide support in implementing the strategy, identifying the sources of investment funding, and providing independent expert evaluations of the strategy implementation effectiveness.
