Hong Kong has been making significant advances in an effort to become a smart city since the unveiling of a Smart City Blueprint in 2017. Initiatives such as the Faster Payment System and "iAM Smart" one-stop personalized digital services platform have been rolled out by the Government to make lives easier and more convenient for residents.

The Government has since updated its Blueprint, which was issued at the end of last year. In a continuous effort to develop Hong Kong into a smart city, the Government has mapped out 130 new and ongoing smart city initiatives under the six smart areas of "Smart Mobility", "Smart Living", "Smart Environment", "Smart People", "Smart Government" and "Smart Economy"'. New and innovative initiatives aimed at bettering citizens' lives include, amongst other things, deployment of a Traffic Data Analytics System, wider adoption of telehealth services, and addressing the needs of rural residents through technology. Specific emphasis is also given to combating the ongoing pandemic through the use of innovation and technology, which include the launch of the "StayHomeSafe" and "LeaveHomeSafe" mobile apps respectively to facilitate the monitoring of people under home quarantine and contact tracing.
