The Swiss M&A Awards once again distinguished the Swiss enterprises whose particularly strong focus on M&A activities caused them to stand out in the past year. This year, winners were selected by popular vote for the first time. The award ceremony was held on Thursday evening at The Dolder Grand in Zurich.

Winners of the 2018 Swiss M&A Awards

  • ABB: most impressive international transaction with Swiss involvement
ABB’s acquisition of GE Industrial Solutions was last year’s most impressive international transaction with Swiss involvement. This USD 2.6 billion deal was agreed in September 2017 and both reinforces ABB’s number two position in the global market for electrification products while also helping the company penetrate the US market.
  • Metall Zug: most impressive national transaction
As part of its efforts to expand the company’s strategic positioning, Metall Zug acquired 70% of the medtech group Haag Streit last December. Haag Streit manufactures surgical and diagnostic equipment and generates sales of around CHF 200 million with a workforce of around 900 people.
  • Nestlé: most active Swiss company on the M&A market
Boasting a grand total of eleven transactions between January 2017 and March 2018, Nestlé was named the most active Swiss company on the M&A market. Many of Nestlé’s transactions are prime examples of how value chains can be integrated into the food industry. Some of the group’s acquisitions included Blue Bottle Coffee, a California-based coffee house start-up; Sweet Earth, a manufacturer of plant-based foods; and Atrium Innovations, a vitamin maker.

M&As driven by pressure to innovate and transform

The past year brought a flurry of M&A activities among Swiss companies in nearly every industry: The total number of transactions with Swiss involvement rose year on year, even while the value of those deals declined slightly. This increase was partly due to mounting pressure to innovate and transform.

“We expect business and operating models to undergo further, more intense transformations, which in turn will lead to additional strategic partnerships, joint ventures and acquisitions,” says Patrik Kerler, Head of M&A at KPMG Switzerland, as he summarizes the situation.
