Summer vacation has already begun in most Swiss cantons and many people are looking forward to travelling abroad again. But let's not forget that there are many amazing travel destinations right on our doorstep here in Switzerland. To help you discover what our different Swiss regions have to offer, leaders from our different KPMG office locations have shared their summertime tips.

Many Swiss people will stay on home turf for their summer vacation again this year. Are there any spots (museums, cinemas, art galleries or local beauty spots) in St. Gallen you would recommend?

Very recommendable - especially as a bad weather option - is a visit to the Textile Museum. Other highlights in St. Gallen include the cathedral and the Abbey Library, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. (www.stiftsbezirk.ch)

Do you have any favorite restaurants in your location, whether in the city or the surrounding countryside?

I really like the restaurant Zum goldenen Schäfli. The house in which the restaurant is located has stood in the old town of St. Gallen for well over 500 years. The restaurant National zum goldenen Leuen, where they serve their famous cheesecake, is also very good. Of course, the famous St. Gallen bratwurst is a MUST.

Are there any ‘must-do’ hikes you would recommend in St. Gallen or the surrounding areas? Are there any particular beauty spots or places they simply have to visit on the way?

The Mülenen Gorge Trail is highly recommended. The Peter and Paul Game Park invites visitors to relax and go for a stroll. Also quite enthralling, however, is the delightful, varied natural landscape. Another worthwhile walk is around the Drei Weieren (Three Ponds) to the Notkersegg monastery and back, where you can enjoy wonderful views.

On hot summer days: Which public swimming pool, lake or river do the locals go to when they want to cool down or go for a swim in St. Gallen or the surrounding area?

The best place to cool off in summer is the Drei Weieren natural swimming pool. Here you can enjoy a wonderful view over the city of St. Gallen and Lake Constance.

For those travelling with kids, what is the coolest attraction in St. Gallen to keep younger tourists entertained? Are there any go-to places if the weather is bad?

As mentioned above, I would definitely recommend the Peter and Paul Game Park for activities with children. Never a dull moment there and always something to see. The Natural History Museum is also perfect for children.

Everyone loves an ice-cream when it’s hot – do you have any insider tips on the best gelateria in town?

Delicious ice cream is available either at Gelateria Vorrei (Neugasse 31, SG) or Dolce Lucia (Bankgasse 2, SG).

Finally, a question for you: Can you tell us where you are spending your summer vacation this year?

I'm already looking forward to my bike tour from Interlaken to Koblenz, always along the Aare River. 😊
