Newfoundland and Labrador announced it is extending its tax return filing deadlines for various provincial taxes. In a provincial news release, dated April 7, 2020, Newfoundland and Labrador said it would extend filing deadlines until June 23, 2020 (for returns originally due on or between March 20, 2020 and May 31, 2020), other than returns required from interjurisdictional carriers, for several provincial taxes, including:

  • Gasoline tax
  • Carbon tax
  • Health and post-secondary education tax
  • Insurance companies tax
  • Mining and mineral rights tax
  • Tax on insurance premiums
  • Tobacco tax

As a result, monthly filers may delay their filing and remittance of such taxes owed for the February, March and April 2020 reporting periods to June 23, 2020.

Deadlines for interjurisdictional carriers

Newfoundland and Labrador is also extending the tax filing and payment deadline for International Fuel Tax Agreement returns from interjurisdictional carriers regarding their first quarter of 2020, to June 1, 2020 (from April 30, 2020).

Remission of interest and penalties

Taxpayers may submit a written request for remission of interest and penalties if they are prevented from making a payment when due, filing a return on time, or otherwise complying with a tax obligation, as a result of COVID-19. All requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
