Canada is prepared to re-impose surtaxes on steel imports if required, following new legislative changes. This amendment, which temporarily cancels a two-year moratorium on imposing surtaxes, follows the recent announcement by Canada and the United States that they would eliminate their respective trade tariffs on steel and aluminum, effective May 20, 2019. This new change, which was announced on June 3, 2019, is intended to allow Canada to more quickly take action to safeguard Canadian business where steel imports increase beyond historical levels.
