Paul has extensive experience in public accounting and the private sector where he was the tax lead for the international and reinsurance activities of a major insurance company. Prior to joining KPMG, Paul led the Canadian insurance tax practice of another Big Four. Paul has advised and consulted a wide array of clients on insurance tax matters. He has developed and implemented tax strategies for insurance corporations. With more than twenty-five years of public accounting and private sector experience, of which eighteen years have been focused on the insurance industry, he has been involved in the:

  • Acquisition and structuring of major insurance blocks of business
  • Structuring of investments supporting insurance reserves
  • Review and assessment of creditor life fronting arrangements
  • Structuring of offshore reinsurance captives and insurance branches
  • Restructuring of major lines of insurance business
  • Provision of due diligence services in respect of the acquisition of a very large Canadian multi-national life insurer, including the potential structuring of such an acquisition
  • Provision of due diligence services as part of a global team to assess for a bidder the acquisition of a major property and casualty insurer
  • Structuring and provision of tax services related to the combination of insurance businesses involving two insurers; and
  •  Post-implementation of business acquisitions.

Paul is currently serving a multitude of insurance clients that operate in the life, property and casualty sectors. He has written numerous articles and has spoken at numerous tax conferences such as the CIAA and the CLHIA.
