Supporting lifelong learning

Lifelong learning is a central tenet of our citizenship strategy.

Across the KPMG network, we understand and value the benefits of a foundation of education and lifelong learning. It can be the key to unlocking potential and to help people out of alife in poverty. That is why lifelong learning and opportunity is a central tenet of our citizenship strategy. Through our ongoing collaborations, we have developed a learning continuum which starts with KPMG Family for Literacy, moving on to Junior Achievement, Enactus and One Young World, which helps us to develop the leaders we need for the future.

KPMG Families for Literacy

Recognizing that strong reading skills are the basis for future success, and that the biggest obstacle to children’s literacy in low-income communities is a lack of books, KPMG in the US started the Family for Literacy (KFFL) program in 2008 in the US.

The aim is to help provide new books to children from low-income families. Managed in collaboration with First Book, in seven years the program has expanded to all 90 KPMG offices in the United States and has grown to become a key citizenship program for our member firms in India, South Africa and Mexico.

In 2015 KPMG in Kenya launched KFFL to coincide with Educate Her Parade. This initiative celebrates the advancement of women and girls by providing scholarships for girls from communities where female education is not a priority.

Junior Achievement Global

Junior Achievement (JA) Worldwide is a not-for-profit organization addressing the social and economic challenges of over 10 million young people. JA provides hands-on financial literacy, entrepreneurship and work-readiness learning, enabling students to use their skills to strengthen their families, communities, nations and economies.

Enactus

Enactus continues to be a strong part of our citizenship programs around the world. We have been an active supporter of and participant in Enactus for more than 13 years, helping to mobilize students to make a difference in their communities, while they also develop the skills that will enable them to become the next generation of socially responsible business leaders.

In 2015, the Enactus World Cup competition took place in Johannesburg as an African event bringing student teams together from 36 countries, joined by academic and business leaders, to showcase how entrepreneurial action can help to achieve social progress within communities, including in some of the world’s least developed countries.

Among the student innovations presented were ways to create sustainable, local power generation, create saleable products from recycled materials, and a project for making and selling eyeglasses for a dollar in poor communities. This was also a milestone year for KPMG International’s collaboration with Enactus, as we have continued our 6 year World Cup sponsor partnership towards 2017.
