As a leader, I never look to go to work every day intending to achieve mediocre results. In my role at KPMG in Bermuda, I have the privilege of supporting and assisting each of my colleagues to equip themselves with the tools to be extraordinary. My role is to manage and lead by providing staff with training, social and learning experiences to inspire confidence and empower change, so that KPMG can be the clear choice. To prepare myself and the Learning & Development (L&D) team, leading by “Excellence”, is the only option. My mindset, value system and professionalism impact the delivery of quality work at the highest professional standards. My role as the L&D leader is evolving and it is important that I stay curious and take personal responsibility for my learning through local and global networking, leading KIG 3.0 (KPMG Islands Group) projects, completing LinkedIn learning and trainings, creating soft skills courses and facilitating them to both internal and external clients. I constantly look to improve the work and service I provide to my colleagues using data and insight, and I pride myself on being open to new challenges and feedback, because that is the only way I can develop and improve.

As the L&D department expands, my responsibilities will continue to increase, and I must strive to be excellent each day. This is important with supporting and assisting the staff accountants for their exams, staff with career development plans, Human Resources with talent management , compliance with training governance, developing and facilitating impactful soft skills training to internal and external clients, and creating avenues for generating revenue for the firm.

I take responsibility and accountability for my actions and look to be an innovative transformative leader, who aims to achieve a culture of excellence in the workplace.

I do this by:

  1. communicating and understanding KPMG’s vision.
  2. being clear on KPMG’s purpose and values.
  3. focusing on supporting the hiring and retention of talented high performers and developing them to be exemplary in their roles.
  4. practicing resilience to changes and challenges.
  5. creating highly collaborative teams in a coaching culture environment. 
  6. instilling an innovative and transformative mentality within KPMG.

In closing, I offer three key secrets to “Excellence”- creating a mindset of excellence, developing strategies for excellence and being able to sustain excellence.
