Hear from our people how they benefit from flexible working arrangements.

Please introduce your role at KPMG.

I am a manager in the Tax department of KPMG in Bulgaria and I have been working on a variety of engagements ranging from M&A tax-related assistance to tax litigation. My current role combines managing client projects where I am the engagement manager and acting as a key team member in assignments managed by colleagues, which requires flexibility in the way I organize my schedule. The role is client-facing and when you have both local and international clients, often working in widely different time-zones, you need to be able to adapt quickly to the rhythm of the respective client and of the specific project. Most M&A-related projects are case in point, with a lot of stakeholders involved and time often being among the scarcest resources.

What is your flexible working arrangement?

Currently, I am on a 10 am to 7 pm work day, i.e. I am using the so-called glide time. I have been on this work schedule for more than a year now. Initially, when I first applied for this working arrangement, I chose an 8 am to 5 pm option and made use of it for several months. So I have had my fair share of experience with glide time.

How do you benefit from it?

Simply put, it better reflects my current daily habits. I love to have some me-time early in the morning, usually for reading and reflection. With my wife not being an early bird, beginning my work day at 10 am also allows me to start the day with her: we usually have breakfast together and plan the evening ahead. So, it is in these little, but important, things that I find the benefit of the glide time.

How do you make it work?

With the level of connectivity that we have nowadays, it is relatively easy to be at the disposal of clients or colleagues even if you are not physically present in the office early in the morning and there is an urgent matter that needs attending to. Plus, I have the hour(s) after 6 pm to concentrate on finishing tasks when the phones are not ringing frequently.

How have you achieved success?

Success is finding your own balance between work and personal life: the balance that allows you to grow as a professional, but also to spend quality time with your family and friends. For the time being, the glide-time arrangement is that little helper for me.
