In July 2021, we hosted a series of webinars on "ClaimShare: Using confidential computing in insurance to detect fraud".

In this series, our experts and partners explored the following topics:

  • Why do we need to collaborate to fight fraud in the insurance industry (in collaboration with B3i and R3)
  • Distributed ledger technologies and confidential computing in practice (with Intel and R3)
  • ClaimShare: platform presentation and live demo (with IntellectEU)

If you missed one of our webinars or would like to revisit the discussion, you can find below for each webinar the summary points and watch the on-demand recording. Should you have any further questions or comments, do not hesitate to reach out to Dave Remue, Head of Fintech at KPMG Belgium.

Why do we need to collaborate to fight fraud in the insurance industry (in collaboration with B3i, R3 and EIOPA)

On 6 July, we deep-dived into the issue, "Why we need to collaborate to fight fraud in the insurance industry".

Below you can find the summary points of this webinar.

  • Insurance fraud is a €13bn problem in Europe.
  • Multiple claim payouts or double-dipping insurance fraud has mainly been undetected because no such data sharing has typically occurred between insurance companies.
  • ClaimShare allows insurers to use private data to detect double-dipping insurance fraud without compromising security and personal data regulations.
  • EU regulation has stimulated data-driven innovation in banking with the introduction of PSD2. Similarly, you see a growing interest in how such a concept can also be applied to the insurance industry. EIOPA has recently issued a consultation on open insurance, and technologies such as confidential computing that allow the use of data whilst preserving privacy offer interesting potential.
  • B3i, a global consortium with a network of 50 insurance participants, wants to make ClaimShare available on its infrastructure layer so that its members can download and install the application easily to fight fraud.

Distributed ledger technologies and confidential computing in practice (with Intel and R3)

On Thursday, 8 July, our webinar on "Distributed ledger technologies and confidential computing in practice" took place.

Below you can find the summary points of this webinar.

  • There is an exponential growth of data. Data security needs to match that growth and be addressed at the different layers: from the application layer to the operating system, up to the silicon. Intel SGX protects you from potential attacks such as compromised operating systems by isolating your secrets from the rest of the computing environment.
  • Intel has been working with many different Linux Foundation project community players to drive confidential computing as a global initiative.
  • R3 has devoted significant research and development to build an application development platform that makes it easy to build applications to use confidential computing to solve business problems.
  • ClaimShare uses Corda to match public data and subsequently uses R3's confidential computing module, Conclave, to protect the most sensitive data and expose potential fraud, but not private data.
  • Confidential computing allows companies to expand the amount and types of data to manage cloud services and fuel AI and machine learning. It is to lead a new sort of cloud innovation as companies become more comfortable handling sensitive data.
  • ClaimShare is the start of many applications we can expect to emerge in financial services, health, and other industries.
